Basel is mild, with warm summers and cold, grey winters, and the weather decides more of your trip than the city itself does. It sets whether a mountain day shows you the Alps, whether you can swim the Rhine and how long the Old Town stays light. Match the month to the Basel Switzerland guided tours you book.
In the city, the walks run in rain and the cruise runs in all weather. A wet day costs you comfort, not the tour: bring a layer and an umbrella and the Old Town is still there.
The day trips are different. A day in the Alps, on Pilatus or on the panoramic train is a day for views, and low cloud can hide the mountains you came to see. The Pilatus day includes its cogwheel railway only from mid-May to mid-October. In December, the Christmas market evenings are cold, and in July the Old Town can be hot by early afternoon.

Highs average 7.1 °C and lows -0.1 °C. Expect 45 mm of rain on about 8 days and 85 hours of sunshine. The driest month of the year, and still cold at night. Fasnacht fills the Old Town from 15 February 2027.
Highs average 11.8 °C and lows 2.6 °C. Expect 50 mm of rain on about 9 days and 135 hours of sunshine. The days lengthen quickly and rain stays under 50 mm. You can walk the Old Town in a light coat by the end of the month.
Highs average 16.2 °C and lows 5.5 °C. Expect 64 mm of rain on about 9 days and 167 hours of sunshine. Sunshine more than doubles on January's. It is a good month to start the Alpine days, as the days grow longer.
Highs average 20.0 °C and lows 9.5 °C. Expect 98 mm of rain on about 12 days and 186 hours of sunshine. The wettest month, by total and by rain days. The Pilatus cogwheel starts running in mid-May, so check the forecast before you book the mountain.
Highs average 23.7 °C and lows 13.1 °C. Expect 87 mm of rain on about 11 days and 212 hours of sunshine. Long, warm days for the mountains and the river. Take a rain layer, because it rains on about 11 days.
Highs average 25.8 °C and lows 14.9 °C. Expect 89 mm of rain on about 10 days and 235 hours of sunshine. The warmest, sunniest month of the year. Swim the Rhine in the afternoon and walk the Old Town early, before the heat.
Highs average 25.3 °C and lows 14.8 °C. Expect 88 mm of rain on about 10 days and 216 hours of sunshine. Almost as warm as July, and the river and the bathing houses are busy. Book the small-group day trips ahead.
Highs average 20.7 °C and lows 11.0 °C. Expect 70 mm of rain on about 8 days and 160 hours of sunshine. Fewer rain days than summer and warm afternoons. You get quiet day trips and the last weeks of the Pilatus cogwheel.
Highs average 15.4 °C and lows 7.6 °C. Expect 74 mm of rain on about 10 days and 107 hours of sunshine. The Pilatus cogwheel stops in mid-October. The light goes by early evening, so start your walks before noon.
Highs average 9.2 °C and lows 3.2 °C. Expect 65 mm of rain on about 10 days and 65 hours of sunshine. Grey and short, with 65 hours of sun in the month. Plan museums for the wet days and walks for the dry ones.

Summer is the easy answer: highs around 25 °C, the most sunshine and the Rhine at its best. It is also the wettest season by total rain, although May alone, at 97.6 mm, is the wettest month.
Winter is cold and dim, with about 204 hours of sunshine across the three months, but it is the driest season, with February the driest month at 45.2 mm. Spring and autumn sit between, and September is the pick of them.
On a summer day, walk the Old Town in the morning, when the lanes are cool and the climb to the Minster is easy, and keep the afternoon for the river or a museum. In winter, the light goes early, so book walks for the late morning.
The day trips choose the hour for you: the rail days leave Basel SBB between 8:15am and 9:30am, and the vans collect you at 8am or 9am. For a clear mountain view, the morning is your best chance.
