Basel works in every season, but each season suits a different trip. Come in summer for the Rhine and the Alps, in Advent for the Christmas market, and in February 2027 for three days of Fasnacht. Pick your month, then pick the Basel Switzerland guided tours that suit it.

May to September is the easy answer for most visitors: long days, warm evenings on the river and the best odds of a clear view from a mountain. The month-by-month figures are on Basel weather by month.
Old Town walks run all year; the Alpine and Lucerne days suit the clear months. Compare them side by side.
Basel Fasnacht opens with the Morgestraich before dawn on the Monday, and dozens of fife and drum clubs parade in masks with lit lanterns. For the next three days the Old Town belongs to them. You do not need a ticket to watch; you need warm clothes and somewhere to stay.
The Kunstmuseum closes from 15 to 17 February 2027, so move museum days to either side. The walking tours around the Old Town may be rerouted by the crowds; ask the operator.
In Advent the Christmas market fills Barfüsserplatz, its white-roofed stalls in front of the Barfüsserkirche, and the Klingental ferry becomes a Christmas ferry during the Basler Weihnacht. Check the 2026 opening dates with Basel Tourismus before you travel.
December is short and dark: 54 hours of sunshine in the month, highs of 5.7 °C and frost on about 15 nights. The Colmar train day still runs, but it pauses its wine tasting during the Christmas market season. A separate day starting in Colmar, France visits the markets of three countries, and one of them is Basel's.
April brings 167 hours of sunshine and highs of 16 °C; May is the wettest month of the year, with 97.6 mm on about 12 days. That matters for the mountains: a day in the Alps is a day for views, and a cloudy summit is a long day for little.
The Pilatus day includes the cogwheel railway from mid-May to mid-October only. Before or after that window, check what replaces it before you book. The Jungfrau region day climbs to Kleine Scheidegg; no fare here goes up to the Jungfraujoch.
July is the warmest month, with an average high of 25.8 °C and 235 hours of sunshine. It is also when the city lives on the river: people swim and float down from below Museum Tinguely, and the bathing houses open from May to September. Hot afternoons in the Old Town are real: July averages 5.3 days of 30 °C or more. Take the walk in the morning, and keep the afternoon for the water.
September keeps summer's warmth, with highs of 20.7 °C and 8.5 rain days, fewer than any month but February. It is the quiet good-weather month for a day trip, and the Pilatus cogwheel still runs until mid-October. October cools to 15.4 °C and loses a third of September's sunshine.
Most tours start in the morning, and the day trips start early. Plan your first day around the start time, not the other way round.
