Two answers matter more than the rest. First, Basel has no gate: you pay for a tour, a museum, and your trams if you are not staying overnight. Second, the fares carry very different things. A walk buys you a guide and nothing more; a day trip buys the transport and, on most, a pass or a ticket at the far end. Every tour card says which. How much does a tour cost?
The Old Town walks start at about $31 a person, the Rhine cruise at about $24 and the bike tour at about $51. Tasting walks run about $108 to $115, and day trips out of the city run from $108 to $495. The private walk with a professional guide and the airport transfer are priced per group.
Is there a ticket for Basel?
No. Basel is a city with no gate, so what you buy is a seat on a tour. Some fares carry a ticket inside them, such as the Rhine cruise, the Beatus Caves, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, a Jungfrau Region Pass or the Pilatus cogwheel. The walks leave museum and cathedral entry to you.
Can I cancel a tour?
Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. The Swiss Travel Pass is the exception: its listing states both 24 hours and 48 hours, so read the terms at checkout before you rely on either.
Do I need to book in advance?
Book the small groups early: the bike tour takes six, and the Alpine and four-country vans take eight. Since every tour but the pass refunds in full to 24 hours, booking early costs you nothing.
What is the best tour for a first day?
A two-hour Old Town walk. The city's own tour leaves from the Tinguely Fountain, and a smaller group leaves the Town Hall on Marktplatz at 10am. Both climb to the Minster and finish with you knowing your way around.
What is the best day trip from the city?

Is there a Basel boat tour?

Is there a Basel bus tour?

Is there a Basel food tour?

When is Basel Fasnacht in 2027?
It begins on Monday 15 February 2027 and runs until Wednesday 17 February, opening with the Morgestraich before dawn. The Kunstmuseum closes from the Monday to the Wednesday.
Does the Pilatus day run all year?
The listing includes the cogwheel railway from mid-May to mid-October only. Outside that window, check what replaces it before you book.
What is the weather like through the year?
Mild. July averages a high of 25.8 °C and January 5.1 °C. May is the wettest month and February the driest, so pack a layer whenever you come.
Are any tours priced per group rather than per person?
Yes. The private walk with a professional guide is $443 for a group of up to 15, and the airport transfer is $128 for a car carrying up to three. The other private walks are priced per person.
What do children pay?
Age bands differ by listing, so check the one you book. The Swiss Travel Pass lets children up to 15 travel free with a parent. The bike tour is not for children under 12.
Is the BaselCard a tour ticket?
No. It is a guest card that every overnight visitor receives with a hotel or holiday-flat booking. It gives free trams and buses in the Basel zones for your whole stay and 50% off some attractions, including a city tour and scheduled Rhine boat trips.
Can I book a private guide?
Yes. Private walks run from two hours to a custom day with pickup at your hotel or the cruise terminal, and most day trips also sell a private option. Check whether the fare is per person or per group.
Which tours pick you up at your hotel?

Is there an art tour in Basel?

No fare here goes up to the Jungfraujoch. The Jungfrau day climbs by rail to Kleine Scheidegg, with time at the Staubbach Falls and in Grindelwald. Lunch at Kleine Scheidegg is at your own cost.
Are the walking tours hilly?
Yes. The Old Town climbs to Cathedral Hill, with steps and slopes on the way up. Guides slow the pace on request, and the cruise and the bus are the flat alternatives.
What languages are the tours in?
Every tour here runs in English. The city walk and the bike tour go bilingual in German and English when the group mixes, and several operators also guide in Spanish, Italian or French.
Is food included?
Only as tastings: the chocolate walk, the cheese walk, the bike tour's two specialities, the bus's Läckerli and the Thun day's cheese. Lunch is never in the fare, so budget for it on a day trip.
How long is a day trip from Basel?
Eight to thirteen hours from start to finish. The four-countries day is the longest, and the Colmar train day can be as short as six hours.
Can I take a tour in a wheelchair?
Some walks list wheelchair access, but the Old Town is steep in places. The vans, the bike tour and the Thun day are not wheelchair accessible, so ask the operator before you book.
Do tours run in the rain?
The Rhine cruise runs in all weather. For the other tours the operator decides on the day, so bring a layer and watch your booking messages.
What runs at Christmas?
The Christmas market on Barfüsserplatz is the centre of the season, and the Klingental ferry becomes a Christmas ferry during the Basler Weihnacht. The Colmar train day pauses its wine tasting during the Christmas market season.
How do I get from the airport to Basel?
EuroAirport sits in France, just outside the city. With a hotel booking in Basel, your confirmation is the free public-transport ticket for the first ride in, and a private transfer can be booked instead.
Do I need a car in Basel?
No. Trams and buses are free for overnight guests with the BaselCard, and the four ferries cross the Rhine on the current. The day trips supply their own trains or vans.

Take tram 11 from Basel SBB, Barfüsserplatz or Marktplatz to the St. Johanns-Tor stop. The guide waits opposite the stop at the park entrance, in a white T-shirt.
How do the Rhine ferries work?
Each of the four ferries hangs from a cable across the river and is pushed over by the current alone. They link Grossbasel and Kleinbasel all year, and the Münster ferry gives you the best view of the Minster.
